Reviews

Pretty Ricky pretty much have sex on the brain, and with hits like "Grind with Me" and "Your Body" off 2005's Blue Stars winning the Miami foursome overnight superstardom, you sort of can't expect them to mess with the formula. That explains the obvious if-it-ain't-broke approach the boy-band of brothers took on this, their sophomore CD: If song titles like "Up and Down" and "Push It" don't say it all, lyrics, as in the unapologetically raunchy ones to "Personal Trainer," most certainly will. Look beyond the sleaze (some of it borderline sweet, as in the line "I've been thinkin' about you all day/In a nasty, passionate way" from "So Confused"), and what you'll find on Late Night Special is a whole lotta talent, though. Pretty Ricky is the current decade's answer to Jodeci, with a little Bone Thugs thrown in; "On the Hotline" brings the heat of the latter, and "Make it Like it Was" steps up with the taut hooks of the former. ~Tammy La Gorce, Amazon.com

Shortly before he died a few years ago, R&B singer Barry White (known for his deep voice and sexy disco-era songs) crossed the United States on a book tour. At every stop, families waited in line for autographs so that parents could push embarrassed young adults in his direction, proudly beaming "…and this is our Barry White Baby" (in other words, the child conceived while listening to his sultry music). It will be interesting to see how many "Pretty Ricky Babies" will be presented to the band members in years to come. It's also interesting to note that Barry White managed to add significantly to the nation's population growth without using one single filthy word -- which brings us to the actual point.
On their second album, the four pretty boys in Pretty Ricky keep both their party and certain parts of the anatomy growing with terrific harmonies, inventive vocal and instrumental arrangements, and a single-minded obsession with sex. You'll have to go far to find more graphic descriptions of the various permutations of getting it on, and you'll also have to go far to find better performances. With a perfect ear for vocal harmony and classic sense of soul arrangements, the group adds some inventive touches that redefine R&B while also paying loving tribute to the genre.
Most parents, however, will not be able to get past lyrics like "He can't stroke it like this / he can't stroke it like that / soon as you walk through the door / I'll put her panties to the floor…poppin' that nookie / I'll be your groupie…just take them clothes off, girl I'm bound to break you off…I never go soft / never go raw," or "Let me do you after school like some homework / but please don't give me no L-I-P…age ain't nothing but a number / you don't need ID for me / I'll be your lover undercover." There's no innuendo or subtlety involved; these guys want to have sex with your daughter.
They also know their way around a gorgeous love song on the last track, "Make It Like It Was," a clean and lovely ballad about remembering the beginning of a love affair. Despite all the posturing and the raunchy talk, we bet this lush, romantic track is the one that will produce more "Pretty Ricky babies" than any of the others. ~Kathi Kamen Goldmark, commonsensemedia.org
