Reviews
It took more than a few spins for Nelly Furtado's latest single to fully impact on me, especially since upon first play, it sounds like she has become Rihanna-lite in "Promiscuous." Though it's hard to fault Furtado for wanting a hit record after 2003's Folklore tanked commercially, "Promiscuous" is the first track where Furtado sounds like she's under the influence of a Svengali. If that's the case, she's certainly in capable hands as "Promiscuous" features killer production from hitmaker Timbaland. And while no one will accuse "Promiscuous" of having deep thoughts - it's about two people who are deciding when and how they're going to have their one-night stand - it's got a chorus and groove that make it a no-brainer crossover radio hit. But at what cost? If Furtado's world music-influenced, conscious pop isn't selling records anymore, is making sleazy, faceless hip-pop tracks the appropriate compromise? Apparently so. ~Geffen/Universal, popjournalism.ca
