Reviews
Common wisdom holds that debut albums have an autobiographical slant, so it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake's first non-'N Sync outing doesn't purloin much of its subject matter from the singer's breakup with Britney Spears. Half the songs are about the abrupt severing of a romance and the singer's rather hard-hearted stance. Sure, he may have been the wronged party, but that doesn't excuse the inflexible emotional posture revealed in "Cry Me a River," "Never Again," and the sniping "Last Night." But Timberlake apparently thinks it does, since he christened his record Justified. He also seems to enjoy boasting about the swinging single life, with many of the songs here almost gratuitously lascivious. Asides like "I could think of a couple positions for you" from "Right for Me" and "Better have you naked by the end of this song" from "Rock Your Body" will catapult the singer right off Radio Disney. But Timberlake shines when he moonwalks into more adult terrain, turning his back on the innocent dance pop that put 'N Sync on the charts. With the help of hip-hop producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, Timbaland, and P. Diddy, Timberlake has turned out a remarkably cohesive and sophisticated slice of club-friendly R&B. ~Jaan Uhelszki, Amazon.com
That's right - I was surprised indeed to find myself not only liking stuff of this album but actually purchasing it. It actually all started when they aired the Q Mix on Q TV (I've actually got an op in the pipeline for the Q Mix). Briefly, for those at the back, The Q Mix is where a few lonely but talented people with little else to do mix a couple of songs together with sometimes good, often bad outcomes. (Although I do like a lot of them, really and I've burned a CD of them - if you want a copy drop me an email). These people send them to Q TV or MTV (for the MTV Mash) and then the channels make videos for the good ones.
Anyway, I was instantly drawn to this mix of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Timberlake's Like I Love You. It had the tunes and chorus of Billie Jean with several verses from Like I Love You played in, working remarkably well. Until then I had only really been vaguely aware of JT's existence as a former member of Nsync* (or wherever the star goes - damn Justin's mum for thinking up the band name) and ex. boyfriend Britney Spears, with a new solo career.
Then, a few weeks later, our school had the lot from Connexions (the teenage help service) in for a talk about exams etc., and putting on a show. In a way to reach out to us, they had taken popular songs and changed the lyrics slightly to fit in with the theme of exams - I think that says it all, really. Anyway, they had taken "Rock Your Body" - I think the lyrics were basically around the gist of "Don't be so quick to walk away - from your exams". That part was dire but what caught my attention (other than the rather hot young lady who was performing) was the really great tune from the song - I'd never noticed it before.
So, after careful personal consultation, and talking with female friends (the male friends just called me a puff - the wieners - but they were the ones missing out) I decided to go ahead and buy it.Yes, I did feel rather embarrassed to buy it and I nearly got my friend to do it, but she wasn't having any of it (you know women - fierce creatures) so I bought it - with a slight smirk from the girl on the till. ~monkfeesh, cd.ciao.co.uk
