Reviews
Given the surprising shelf life some of these remixes have already enjoyed, collecting them in one place might make things handy for Destiny's Child fans and frequent clubgoers. Which is not to suggest there's much musical merit here; like the majority of remix albums, it underscores the superiority of the songs' original versions--even when they weren't that great to begin with.
So while Rockwilder guts one of the group's finest singles, removing the ominous guitar line from "Bootylicious" and leaving a shell behind, the trio's mediocre cover of "Emotion" also isn't improved by the overbearing (and unimaginative) beat the Neptunes slip underneath it. In fact, the best track is one most potential purchasers already own: "Independent Women Part II," from the group's 2001 album Survivor. The frothy pop-house concoctions of DJ Maurice ("Bills, Bills, Bills" and "So Good") might be an enticement to buy, but otherwise, this is a straight-up cash grab. Maybe they should've called it "This Is A Stickup" instead. ~Dan Leroy, LAUNCH.
This Is the Remix shows just why Destiny's Child is such a powerhouse: they have wicked songs that can survive almost any treatment. Not that the selections, culled from the group's three preceding albums, are mishandled here. The Neptunes aren't quite at the top of their game on "Emotion," but Timbaland's sexy remix of "Say My Name" is one of the best things he's done--and that's saying a lot. Despite too many rap interludes, the CD ends on a high note with feverish Maurice Joshua mixes of "Jumpin', Jumpin'," "Bills, Bills, Bills," and "So Good" that are simply fantastic dance-floor burners. The one misstep is the tucked-away "Heard a Word," a track from Michelle Williams's solo album. Still, this is state-of-the-art mainstream R&B designed to tide fans over until the triumvirate goes back to the studio together. ~Elisabeth Vincentelli, Amazon.com.
